BACKGROUND

The golf course at the Traditions Club in College Station, Texas is a Jack Nicklaus/Jack Nicklaus II design constructed in 2003 by Weitz Golf.  The golf course superintendent, designers, owners, and management company decided early on that they would not use an ultradwarf Bermudagrass for the greens, citing concerns about management and examples of other courses having difficulties with some ultradwarf cultivars.

In the spring of 2003, superintendent Sean Hogan accompanied by a group from the project made a visit to inspect the nurseries of Champion Turf  Farms in Bay City, Texas. During this visit they were shown the brand-new Emerald Dwarf  Bermudagrass nursery which had been propagated from one single sprig as well as new Tifsport Bermudagrass fields.  These nurseries were designated to supply the Traditions project.

One of the turfgrass management challenges at this site is the quality of the irrigation water, which contains very high levels of sodium and severely high levels of bicarbonates.  The rootzones are USGA specification with a coarse sand rootzone and high percolation rate.  The exceptionally deep roots of the Emerald cultivar have allowed the maintenance staff to practice very deep and infrequent watering to continually flush the sodium down through the profile.

Even in periods of extended drought, the Emerald cultivar has performed exceptionally well with this water. The greens on the course are not overseeded in winter, with the exception of the greens used by the Texas A&M golf team and the green on the practice hole.
